In The Footsteps of Larkin & Lacey

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the consequent entitlement of dignity and human rights is what lead to the emergence of human rights and civil rights based groups. These groups continue to play a cardinal role in focusing international community on human rights issues. Among the rights mostly advocated for are civil, immigrant and human rights groups. In this article, we are going to focus on some of the organization that has been on the forefront in advocating for these rights.

Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund

Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is one of the organizations that advocate for civil, minority and human rights. The group sprung after the arrest of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin on October 18, 2007, where they were taken out of their homes and jailed for revealing the existence of grand jury proceedings that sought reporters notes on articles covering Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio.

It is from $ 3.75 million settlement in this case that started funding migrant right organizations throughout the state of Arizona. The two journalists support lobby groups that advocate for civil, human, and asylum seeker rights as well as freedom of civic participation throughout Arizona. Advocates for Human Rights

For more than 30 years, Advocates for Human Rights has been on the forefront of human rights movement by creating as well as maintaining lasting, holistic, and detailed change on a local, national and global scale. As an independent, non-partisan non-profit organization, they rely on support from various partners and volunteers. The organization seeks to investigate and expose human right violations, represent refugees and immigrants seeking asylum, engage policy makers as well advocating for sound policy.

Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch was established in 1978, and it’s widely known for advocacy, partnering up with local human rights watch groups, fact-finding, truthful reporting and correct use of media. According to its website, Human Rights Watch publishes an impressive 100 reports on human rights conditions in 90 countries around the globe.”

The organization’s US program on immigration directs its effort in changing unpleasant policies which do not conform to the current status of deportation and detention.

This is mainly achieved through revealing of insecure working conditions and crimes that illegal asylums fear reporting. Carrying out this program takes the due concern on labor issues, flight from discrimination as well as the family unit. Further, the process ensures the protection of immigrants from US deportation. It protects both the citizens and non-citizens from the devastating impact that would result from unlawful deportation.
